Whether it’s online competition from Amazon, or competition from a big box retailer like WalMart, small retailers that sell undifferentiated products are always susceptible to being undercut on price. It’s a lot of ongoing work to find and carry unique products, but it’s necessary for long term survival.

Yes, associates need and deserve better training but many companies can’t be bothered to give it. Shoppers now want to be charmed and delighted, (not always wanting cold hyper-efficiency), and that means hiring and rewarding a very different sort of person than a faster machine with legs.
